“Oh LORD, Thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived: Thou art stronger than I, and hast prevailed: I am in derision daily, everyone mockethme. For since I spake, I cried out, I cried violence and spoil; because the word of the LORD was made a reproach unto me, and a derision, daily. Then I said, I will not make mention of Him, nor speak anymore in His name. But His word was in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.”
(Jeremiah 20:7-9)

Jeremiah had it pretty rough. Yes, he was commissioned to be an iron pillar and brazen wall, but he expected some success. He preached, warned, and wept like an artesian fountain, but to no avail. Jerusalem would not turn and would not soften. Was there no Balm in Giliad?

Yet, the summer had past and still Israel was not saved!  Instead, they persecuted Jeremiah, threw him in a pat, smacked the spit out of his mouth, seized his property, mocked and laughed him to scorn and ostracized him.  Finally, Jeremiah had enough.  Who needs this job?  Obviously, God does not care…Ok..I QUIT!!  I’ve had it!!  I’ll go with the flow and save myself a lot of heartache.  But THE WORD OF GOD WAS SHUT UP IN HIS BONES, like a burning fire.  When something burns in you, how do you quit?

An engaged couple was broken as the bridegroom was sentenced to death because of a military infraction.  The cee
The fiancée went to the king of England begging for mercy…None.  When the bell tolls at noon tomorrow your lover will be hanged.  The dainty young lady climbed the bell tower and moments before noon she wrapped herself around the clapper.  As the massive bells swung back and forth 12 times, she held tight.  The bell was never heart!!!  Later, she stood before the king bloodied and battered…And the king said because of your uncommon love your lover is set free!  She could not quit — because something burned in her!

But, how much more powerful is it when the Word of God is smoldering in our bones??  It needs ventilation?  It needs to come out. Jeremiah tried to quit but couldn’t.  Or maybe he did?  — He just re-enlisted!!  Once the Word of God is in a true believer, the believer cannot quit easily.

“Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted Word, which is able to save your souls.” (James 1:21)
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” (I Peter 1:23)

It’s in your bones.  Maybe cannons can be silenced for a while but eventually the 66 Canon must smoke again.

Jeremiah had to keep preaching in spite of no results.  He was kidnapped, take to Egypt and never heard of again.  But this 52 Chapter book has encouraged and strengthened millions; and, like a raging fire, it has scorched rebellious generations.  Why,even our Lord was likened to Jeremigh.  But our amazing Lord never had to re-enlist, because He never quit when tempted.  Amen!

We are tempted to quit; but closing the flue only causes more smoke, we must open our mouths again and take our stand with God.  Don’t quit and if you do, re-enlist!!  There is no discharge in this War.
